Here's Gandalf the Grey Illustrated from scratch using photoshop
I used multiple references to create this piece, and it's not just based in one photo. Basically, I'm not using someone else's exact composition, nor using the exact same colour palette as the photo I was copying. I have separate references for the colour palette, the face, the arms and the sword. I then combined all of those elements to create this piece.
For those who think that hyper realism isn't for illustrators and its basically just a job for photographers, well it's not, because there's always a way around it. Even if some illustrators who draw from photos copy it, it doesn't mean that they can copy it perfectly It will always be different, there will always be a different interpretation from the artist. It's basically an "adaptation" of a previous art form--a derivative. Just thought I should share my opinion.
Anyways, so here it goes! I used multiple sets of brushes to add textures and other details. It was indeed quite enjoyable.
Medium: Done in Photoshop CS6. Wacom Intuos 4 tablet.
Time: Around 15 hours.
